At-a-glance
Context
In a remote-working world, physical strain from desk work is a growing issue, contributing to over 30% of UK work-related sick days. Bendly's onboarding is designed to be as simple and welcoming as the product itself, to ensure engagement with the service.

Problem
Onboarding
If onboarding is too complicated, or has too many steps, signing up can feel like a task in and of itself.

Solution
Incentivisation
Self-care requires dedication. Providing users with a process that makes onboarding a simple and easy process, helps them feel as though their future dedication is straightforward.
It isn't enough to be quick. Businesses need reassurance, that their access is also secure. An OTP system provides this.
Straightforward
Easy for users to use, minimising the need for complex password management.
Highly reliable
If a user does not receive OTP on time, they can request another, the server then resends the OTP for verification.
More secure
OTPs are far more secure than static passwords because they typically expire after a short period.
Tailored service
During the onboarding process, users are asked a small sample of questions to determine important factors like their physical ability, and how Bendly can fit into their schedule.
Recommendations on what sessions the user should take are then provided in-app, helping them get started with confidence.
A personal experience. From the start.
Straight to it
As the final step in joining Bendly, setting up their profile allows users to jump straight into joining their team as their information is shared, to let others know who they are.
By placing this step within the onboarding process, users won't have the hassle of having to navigate to their blank profiles and edit them, they can enjoy the service immediately!

Research
Throughout my research, users spoke regularly about wanting a wellness app that is quick to use, and targets mindfulness, rather than physical improvement. Minimal disruption was the most desirable quality.

Step 1.
One of many Google Meet calls with the UX team and developers
As a team, we regularly came together to discuss possible solutions in how Bendly could feel simple for users.
When it came to onboarding, we decided that it was important to keep it simple. To give the feeling that there are a small number of screens.
Removing a screen dedicated to selecting Sign-Up or Login dramatically sped up the onboarding process. Moreover, combining both onboarding options into one screen made the process of entering the app, feel even quicker and easier.
Step 2
Motion and mindfulness

Animating the splash using LottieFiles
The visuals are brought to life using LottieFiles to create a more engaging, interactive feel. Users will be stretching and meditating, so static imagery wouldn’t capture the dynamic nature of that experience.
Bendly is about providing a kind and accessible wellness service for remote workers. The colour palette and imagery reflects that mantra.
White and blues are suited to the working environment without being overwhelming, and meet Web Accessibility Guidelines.
The outcome
Effective onboarding
The final onboarding flow
The user flow was prototyped and annotated to ensure developers could easily understand its intent and complexity.
Extensive wireframing and iteration ensured a clear, well-defined onboarding path covering all possible outcomes.
Usability testing was carried out using an app prototype created by the developer using my design. This was used to gather feedback from our users and team, to ensure that the path was clear.
